Update: Victim identified in homicide, meth lab investigation in Birmingham


The Birmingham Police{}ea{}have identified the victim in a Friday morning homicide and meth lab investigation as 23-year-old Derrick Phillips of Birmingham.


Four Birmingham police officers were taken to the hospital for evaluation since they went inside an apartment where an active meth lab was underway. Sergeant Johnny Williams says this is a precaution. Apartments close to the scene have been evacuated.

The Birmingham Police Department is on the scene of an apartment complex on Clairmont Ave. where a body and an active meth lab were found Friday morning.

ABC 33/40 has learned police first received a call at 6:30 a.m. that someone heard three shots. BPD didn't find anything once responding to the scene. Later on, BPD received a call of a body down. At that time, officers found a deceased man.

Clinton Thornton, who lives directly beneath the apartment scene, says he always suspected drug activity, saying "they never went to sleep." Thornton says he believes two men lived in the apartment.
