Brighton man captured in stolen car in Center Point
Jefferson County Deputies attempted to stop a black Cadillac on Center Point Parkway near 20th Avenue NW for a traffic violation just before 4pm Thursday afternoon. A check of the tag showed the car had been reported stolen to the Birmingham Police Department.
Instead of stopping, the car sped away. Deputies pursued the car and, after a short time, the car turned into a cul-de-sac where the driver and passenger fled on foot.
The driver was caught and a lookout was issued for the passenger. A small amount of marijuana was found in the car.
A neighbor called the Sheriff's Office and reported that the passenger had removed his shirt and entered the open basement of a nearby home. Responding deputies found the passenger running on Tupelo Way and took him into custody.
Deputies learned that the car had been stolen during a robbery in the city of Birmingham on Wednesday. The driver and passenger were both taken to the Center Point Substation and questioned by detectives. Detectives from Birmingham Police also questioned the pair about the robbery and stolen car.
The driver, 19 year old Roderick Lee Sharpe III of Brighton, was charged with Receiving Stolen Property 1st Degree, Attempting to Elude, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree and Resisting Arrest. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bonds totaling $61,600.
The passenger was identified as a 17 year old juvenile. He was arrested and charged with Attempting to Elude and Burglary 3rd Degree. He was placed in the Jefferson County Youth Detention Facility.
