Candlelight vigil planned for Bessemer shooting victim; Suspect in custody

Defarris Parham

ABC 33/40 reporter Cory McGinnis has learned that a candlelight vigil will be held at Davis Park Friday night in honor of 18-year-old Defarris Parham of Pleasant Grove, the young man shot and killed in Bessemer on March 15.

The vigil will come exactly one week after Parham was found shot to death at Davis Middle School just days after celebrating his 18th birthday. Bessemer Police reported Tuesday morning that Derionas Ronale Sewell, 19, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting.

Police said the victim was shot around 8:40 p.m. last Friday night in the 1200 block of Clarendon Avenue before being discovered on the nearby middle school campus.{}

During a Bessemer City Council meeting today, councilor Cleophus King offered a prayer to Parham's family and councilor David Vance requested that the council adopt a "pledge of unity", dedicated to preventing youth violence. Council has since officially adopted the pledge.
