Center Point fire leaves two dead and one injured

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Jefferson County sheriff's officials say two people have been killed and two others have been hospitalized in a house fire.

Sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian says authorities were dispatched to a blaze in the Center Point area on Sunday morning and were told that five people were inside the house when the fire started.

Christian says a Birmingham Police officer was able to rescue one person and two others escaped.

The identities of the two people who were killed haven't been released. Christian says one person has been hospitalized. Details on the extent of that person's injuries weren't immediately available.

Christian says the responding police officer has been treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are unsure of how the fire started and the blaze is under investigation.
