Charges announced against owner of Birmingham pet grooming business

BIRMINGHAM - AL — Update as of 6:10 p.m. The suspect turned himself in to the Jefferson County jail.-----------------------------------------------The Jefferson County Sheriff's office announced charges today against the owner of a pet grooming business. Deputies executed a search warrant at the business located at 4915 5th Avenue South in Birmingham on June 12th. Investigators had received information last month that indicated the business was operating as an animal shelter and adoption service. Deputies removed thirteen dogs and two cats from the business that were not being properly cared for. The owner of the business, 45-year-old Scott Alan Kirkland, was not present at the time of the search warrant. Investigators obtained arrest warrants on June 27th charging Kirkland with five counts of animal cruelty and one count of operating a business without a license. He remains at large. His bond totals $31,000.
