Lockdown at Chelsea Middle School lifted; One person detained

The Chelsea Middle School is currently on lockdown and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is on the scene.

All students are safe at this time and the building is secure, but the lockdown remains in place. It is unknown at this time the reason for the lockdown.

Law enforcement is expected to release a statement regarding the incident in the near future.

We have a crew at the scene and will provide updates as information is made available.


Release from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office:

"The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident that occurred this afternoon, Tuesday February 12, 2013, at Chelsea Middle School.{} The school was locked down and one person has been detained.{}{} No one was injured and all students present are safe.{} Sheriff's deputies remain at the school and will be there for some time ensuring that the school is safe."

Update #2:

"At this time, all students are being released and buses are going to be leaving on their normal routes.{} Traffic congestion is impeding the buses leaving further delaying their departure.{} Children will also be released to parents at the school through the front entrance to the middle school.{}"Shelby County Sheriff's deputies and investigators continue to investigate the incident that led to the school's lockdown.{} All students and faculty are safe and there are no reported injuries.{} One person is being held for questioning."

Sheriff Curry will meet with the media and parents at Chelsea City Hall beginning at 6 p.m. tonight to address the incident.

Update #3

Sheriff Curry reports that a graduate of the Chelsea School System and former part-time employee had a semi-automatic weapon at Chelsea Middle School Tuesday afternoon, forcing the school to go under lockdown.

A Shelby County Sheriff's deputy at the school was able to safely diffuse the situation and the suspect in now in custody.

The school has been swept for bombs and other threats, and has been cleared to reopen on its normal schedule Wednesday. Four deputies will be present at the school tomorrow.
