This week, Children's of Alabama did its first solid organ transplant inside the new Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children. The facility recently received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing to begin performing heart, liver and kidney transplant surgery on pediatric patients.
Prior to this, pediatric patients needing a solid organ transplant were admitted to Children's for pre-op testing and care, then transported to UAB for the actual surgery and then transported back to Children's for post-operative care. Now, all services needed in a pediatric organ transplant are united under one roof.
The new Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children is a state-of-the-art facility that opened last summer.
Children's of Alabama is the third largest pediatric medical facility in the United States. It has been ranked among the top children's hospital programs in the country for the past three years by US News & World Report.
