ORANGE BEACH - AL — A 20 year old Chilton County man drowned in Orange Beach Wednesday.Investigators determined the man was swimming with friends off the Alabama Point East Beach access, just east of the Perdido Pass jetties. His friends noticed as he got further from the group he began to struggle. That's when they called lifeguards. After a 32 minute search by firefighters, Surf Rescue and helicopters, the man was found on a sandbar about 50 yards from shore. At the family's request, his identity has not been released. The Orange Beach Fire Department urges caution when swimming in local waters and encourages swimmers to adhere to beach warning flags as a recreational swim quickly can become life-and-death in treacherous waters. Residents and visitors can obtain daily beach reports by calling 251-981-SURF (7873).
