City of Alabaster considering ordinance requiring homeowners to pay for damaged sidewalks

The City of Alabaster is considering an ordinance that would lay the foundation for holding homeowners accountable for repairing damaged sidewalks.

Residents will be able to ask questions and share concerns at an upcoming public hearing May 6.

"We can't just go out there and fix private property," said Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon. "So that's why it has to be some type of ordinance where we figure out what to do."

Mayor Handlon said state law requires homeowners to maintain sidewalks on their property, but{}the city must pass an ordinance explaining how to hold residents accountable before taking action.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 pm.
