Civil Rights Unit in Birmingham

(AP) The Justice Department is establishing a civil rights unit based in Birmingham.{}{} {}The head of the agency's civil rights division, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, will be in the city Tuesday to announce the formation of the unit. It will concentrate on both civil lawsuits and criminal enforcement of federal civil rights laws.{}{} {}The unit will be based within the U.S. attorney's office in Birmingham.{}{} {}The city was a flash point in the civil rights struggle 49 years ago as protesters led by Martin Luther King Jr. marched for equal rights and an end to laws mandating racial segregation.
