      Common Core debate at statehouse

      More than 100 people crowded into the Alabama House chamber for a public hearing on legislation that would repeal education standards known as Common Core that were adopted for Alabama schools by the state school board.Members of the House Education Policy Committee and the Senate Education Committee held an emotional public hearing for more than two hours Wednesday. Neither committee voted on repealing the standards.A number of educators, local school officials and state schools Superintendent Tommy Bice spoke against repealing the standards. Bice said getting rid of the standards would undo many of the advancements Alabama schools have made in recent years.House Speaker Mike Hubbard said he wants Alabama to set its own standards and believes Common Core will lead to federal control of state schools.
