Coping with cancer during the holidays

Theholidays are a time when most people get together with friends and family torelax and reminisce. Cancer, however, doesn't take a holiday.

TheAmerican Cancer Society information line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek, even on holidays. It offers information and support for cancer patients, family members, friends of cancerpatients, and others who have questions about cancer.

In 2012 fiscal year, cancer information specialists answered more than 8,950 callsfrom Alabama patients, caregivers, volunteers and information seekers.

By callingthe National Cancer Information Center (NCIC) at 1-800-227-2345, patients canspeak to an information specialist and receive information on various types ofcancer, cancer treatments, how to manage symptoms, prevention and detectionguidelines, and many other topics. The NCIC can then contact a local AmericanCancer Society office to provide local cancer resources, such as supportgroups, patient service programs, and social services.
