Cordova teacher receives national award

A small town Alabama educator, is being recognized on the national level for inspiring her students.

Donna King of Bankhead Middle School in Cordova{} was awarded most inspiring teacher in the national "Apple for a Teacher" contest.

On Tuesday, King was surprised by more than 200 students, faculty and administrators.

King is a special education teacher at Bankhead. She is recognized for helping students succeed, despite their disabilities. King even spends her own money to pay for the learning supplies they need.

Part of her award, includes $10,000 given to the school to help pay for supplies.

"I felt completely blessed by the entire thing. Because it's something, I cannot personally write a check for $10,000 to this school. But I can, through this, do something for them," said King.

The $10,000 was raised by the Cordova community to support Donna in the national "Apple for a Teacher" contest.
