Crews building free-standing emergency room; first in state

Large machines were moving earth and preparing a 2.5 acre lot near the intersection of interstate 459 and 150 Wednesday. {}The project will be the new home of UAB Medical West free standing emergency room. {}It will be the first of its kind in Alabama.{}

"We expect about 11 to 12 months worth of construction. Summer of 2015 is when we expect to open," said Nathan Clark, Director of Business Development for UAB Medical West.{}The facility will have 12 regular exam rooms and 2 trauma rooms.{}"We anticipate having 30 to 40 patients a day. It will be a 24/7 facility; exactly like the emergency department like we have on campus in Bessemer," said Clark.{}{}The Hoover City Council invested nearly a million dollars into project. Hoover city officials say the money was well spent. {}The residents of Hoover will soon have an emergency medical facility in their own town.{}"Its gonna be huge for us on our response times, ability to get people to E.R rooms," said Gary Ivey, Mayor of Hoover. "It literally could be life altering for people who are in trouble."{}
