Crime Stoppers April 19: Who took Manquel Mertez Whittsett's life?

Manquel Mertez Whittsett

It hasn't even been a year since a Birmingham man lost his life. The homicide happened in the summer of 2013, and police don't want to waste any more time. That's why they're calling on you to help in this unsolved killing.

"I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper.

We're searching for whoever took Manquel Mertez Whittsett's life, and we won't stop until we find that person. It was a Wednesday when Whittsett died.

June 5, 2013, officers were called to Leaf Lake Boulevard. When they got there, Whittsett was lying on the ground beside a black, 2004 BMW 545I. He had been shot at his apartment complex. Paramedics transported him to UAB Hospital, but he lost his life right after he arrived. Several people who lived in the apartment complex heard several gunshots. Then they found him sitting in his car.

That's what we know. We know that's not a lot, but that's why we need your help. No detail is too small. In fact, it could be what closes this case.

We understand you may be afraid to talk. But rest assured: Crime Stoppers is anonymous. Plus, if it leads to an arrest, you're eligible for a cash reward. So there's something in it for you.

But what should drive you is justice for this victim and a desire to keep the community safer.

We can't do it without you, and we're counting on you.

With Crime Stoppers, I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper."
