Dancers fighting cancer fundraiser

It was the 5th Annual Tapping Out Childhood Cancer Gala which showcased local dancers and dance styles at Gabrella Manor.

Sunday's event was to raise money for the developmental therapeutics program at Children's of Alabama to help find new and better treatments for childhood cancer.

Cancer survivor Alex Swader, 13, of Mount Olive founded the event. {}When Alex was receiving treatment for Ewing's sarcoma in 2007, he dreamed of returning to dance and finding a way to help other children going through a similar experience. He founded "Dancers Fighting Cancer", and through dance-related fundraiser's such as Tapping Out Childhood Cancer Gala, Swader and others have raised more than $50,000 for cancer research at Children's.

His efforts were recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals when they presented him with the Young Philanthropist Award in 2012. He has been cancer-free for five years.
