Dispute over details delays Magic City Classic funding
Birmingham City Councilors have twice delayed a funding vote for the 2013 Magic City Classic. They say they won't approve $590,000 in funding without a detailed look at where the money is going.Mayor WillamBell says he will give councilors the details. ABC 33/40 obtained a spreadsheet with line items for each spending option. Along with the usual costs for the participating schools, shuttles and caterers, Bell also wants to provide additional funding for a marketing plan and tent and light rentals.Several councilors tell ABC 33/40 they support the Classic however they want to know how each dollar is spent.Bell's Chief of Staff Chuck Faush says councilors have every right to request details, but he insists funding is critical since the city is entering its last contract to host the game. The 2013 Magic City Classic match-up between Alabama A & M and Alabama State Universities is scheduled for October 26.In 2012, the game and its festivities made an economic impact of more than $20 million for the city of Birmingham. For more information:http://www.themagiccityclassic.com/
