Dr. Ray Watts named UAB's new president
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
It's unanimous. UAB has a new president.
"I love UAB," Dr. Ray Watts said.
Watts, who is a Birmingham native and a graduate of UAB says he is ready to lead the Blazers.
"I'm very excited about the future," he said.
In the first six months, he wants to bring everyone together and have deliberate, thoughtful planning that he hopes will guide the university's investments and priorities.
"I think it's very important to unify our plans together so that we can draw on our strengths and support one another around our true areas of excellence," he said.
"Everything he has done at this institution...he's been successful at," Board member, John McMahon said.
McMahon says out of the many qualified applicants, Dr. Watts was a clear choice.
"We felt he was the one, given the totality of his abilities and knowledge and history of the institution, most likely to lead it forward in the way that the board and the institution wants to go," he said.
Watts was also asked about the possibility of a new stadium for the Blazers. He says, first, the university needs to show it really wants it.
"To increase the attendance and support by our students, our faculty, our staff and our alumni to show how much it means to us," Watts said. "I'm a strong believer that actions speak louder than words."
