"Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Campaign in Northport

On August 31, 2012 the Northport Police Department, along with assistance from the Alabama State Troopers, conducted a DUI checkpoint on Lurleen Wallace Boulevard as a part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. A total of 1014 vehicles passed through the checkpoint in a four hour period. Officers made sixteen total arrests, eleven of which were drug or alcohol related offenses. Five warrants/writs were served. Two of the arrests resulted in felony charges.The Northport Police Department had 18 officers on scene with the Alabama State Troopers providing an additional four Troopers for the detail. A total of 148 traffic tickets and written warnings were issued along with numerous verbal warnings.

"We've responded to a high number of traffic fatalities this year. In all of the crashes, alcohol was the prime contributing factor. Every year hundreds of people loose their lives at the hand of a drunk driver," said Sgt. Heath Smitherman of the Northport Police Department "These types of enforcement activities are a step in the right direction in preventing these crashes."
