Drivers battle icy road conditions in Chilton County

CHILTON COUNTY, Ala. -- Like many other motorists across Alabama Tuesday, drivers in Chilton County faced treacherous road conditions as a stronger-than-expected winter storm blanketed the South.

Snow and ice quickly layered parts of Interstate 65 and surrounding county roads. Dan Wright, the director of the Chilton County E-911 office, tells ABC 33/40 his office received 78 weather-related accident calls since 7:30 a.m. Wright says he doesn't believe any of those resulted in serious injuries or deaths.

Despite the best efforts of the county's road department, which worked feverishly to salt roads, some streets and bridges remained too dangerous for motorists.

Meanwhile, some drivers avoided roads all together and hunkered down inside restaurants and hotels. The Holiday Inn Express in Clanton even sold out of rooms.{}As for schools, all county schools will be closed Wednesday.
