Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients

A bill proposing mandatory drug testing of some welfare applicants is expected to generate debate at the state capital.

Republican Senator Trip Pittman of Daphne says it would only apply to people with drug convictions in the last five years.{} A similar law in Florida required testing of all applicants and it was struck down. Pittman introduced this bill in the 2013 legislative session. It passed in the Senate and died in the House. This legislative session starts Tuesday.

One group representing Alabama's poor says money spent on drug testing would be better spent on drug treatment services.
