Alabama is one of 17 states affected by an electronic glitch that's left people unable to make purchases with their food stamp debit cards.
Many stores around the Birmingham area have signs posted, warning customers about the problem.
The Xerox Corporation runs the EBT card systems for several states. The company says a routine check resulted in a system failure and its technical staff is working to fix the problem.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources released the following statement:
"The interruption of EBT services in Alabama is not connected with the government shutdown in Washington. A statement will be released once the system is operational."
