EPA update on North Birmingham Superfund site

Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency gave five Birmingham companies a deadline to respond to a notification that they contributed to contamination and pollution in the Collegeville, Harriman Park and Fairmont neighborhoods.{}The companies include U.S. Pipe, Walter Coke, Alagasco, KMAC and Drummond Coal.{}EPA Spokesperson James Pinkney tells ABC 33/40 the agency has received responses from two of the companies since the deadline ended. Pinkney says, because of confidentiality rules, he can't release the names of companies that have or haven't responded.{}The EPA plans to send out information next week regarding a public meeting where updates will be given. Pinkney expects that meeting to happen in December in one of the affected communities.{}Stay with ABC 33/40 for more information.{}
