EXCLUSIVE: Parent involved in Carver High fight speaks


Update 11:00 a.m. March 7In an exclusive interview, James Henderson tells ABC 33/40's Marissa Mitchell his account of what happened during a fight Thursday at Carver High School. Henderson bonded out of jail. He says he never intended to cause an altercation, but he was attacked by a school administrator while filing a report for his daughter who had been involved in an earlier fight with other freshman girls. Henderson says he has been banned from school property, but school leaders "have not seen the last" of him. He says he has made numerous attempts to stop students from bullying his daughter. But he admits she has been in a previous fight and was suspended.Stay with ABC 33/40 for more on this developing story. We take situations that jeopardize security very seriously, and we will not tolerate actions by groups or individuals that compromise school safety. {}Pending the outcome of the investigation, any student found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct will be disciplined to the fullest extent allowed by the code."{}Update 1:50 p.m.BPD identify the parent in custody as 42-year-old James Henderson of Birmingham. He is charged with disorderly conduct.Update 11:45 a.m.According to Lt. Sean Edwards, four freshmen were arrested Wednesday and a student's parent was arrested Thursday stemming from fights at Carver High School.Edwards says the parent will face a disorderly conduct charge. The students face affray charges (or fighting).Update:ABC 33/40 reporter Marissa Mitchell has learned that the parent was pepper-sprayed during an apparent fight with the Carver High School assistant principal. Edwards says officers used the spray to diffuse the situation and only used on the parent. However several people told ABC 33/40 students were pepper sprayed too.According to a witness at the scene, the fight stemmed from an earlier altercation between a large group of girls who reportedly "jumped" another female student. After learning of the alleged attack on his daughter, the student's father, along with her aunt and another relative, went to the school to investigate. Lt. Edwards says the father tried to file a police report in the main office when one of his relatives got into an altercation in the hallway with someone. The father then got into that fight and a larger altercation ensued involving the school's assistant principal.{}Edwards says school resource officers arrived at the school after the first fight this morning. They were doing roll calls. He also says the first fight happened before 8 a.m.Edwards says there have been several fights all week between ninth-graders at Carver High School.{}An investigation remains ongoing. A spokesperson for Birmingham City Schools says the system is "currently assessing the situation."
