Executions in US drop close to 20-year low

A new report finds fewer people are being executed in the United States.

The report, by the non-profit Death Penalty Information Center, noted only 39 people were put to death in 2013.{} No more executions are scheduled for this year.

This is only the second time in the past two decades that number of inmates executed was below 40.{}{} The report says one of the reasons for the decrease in executions is that states are having trouble getting lethal injection drugs.{}{} States have been left scrambling to find alternatives after some European-based manufacturers banned US prisons from using their drugs in executions.

Currently, 32 states have the death penalty.{} Only{}nine{}conducted lethal injections this year.
