Family of woman killed in Gate City gas explosion files lawsuit
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A lawsuit has been filed against the Birmingham Housing Authority and Alagasco after a fatal explosion at an apartment complex last week.
Attorney Glenda G. Cochran filed the suit in Jefferson County Circuit Court on behalf of Darryle Jerome Brown, who remains hospitalized at UAB after the Dec. 17 explosion.
Authorities have said Brown and his 40-year-old fianc Tyrennis Mabry were crushed by rubble, and Mabry later died.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators have said a gas leak in a distribution pipe likely caused the explosion. Investigator Ravindra Chhatre has said the pipe was about 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and was installed in 1951.
The suit claims the housing authority didn't respond to complaints of gas leaks in the area.
Calls to the housing authority and Alagasco weren't returned.
