Federal judge moves closer to naming Jefferson County receiver

A federal judge is moving closer to naming a receiver for Jefferson County after a status conference hearing at the Hugo L. Black United States Courthouse in Birmingham Thursday.

While U.S. District Court Judge Lynwood Smith, Jr., has not named{}the receiver, yet, he{}said{}in court today he{}would not let{}he or she{}"run amok."

For hours, attorneys discussed the receiver's role, compensation and qualifications. Attorneys for{}Jefferson County{}expressed concerns about the receiver's financial and legal constraints while the county works toward exiting bankruptcy.

Last month, Judge Smith ordered a receiver to oversee hiring practices after he found the{}county was unable to abide by the federal consent decree.

Four names have been submitted as candidates{}to run Jefferson County's human resources department. Judge Smith and attorneys met behind closed doors to discuss those candidates. It's unclear when{}he will name the receiver.
