Fire deaths up, homicides down in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
Two months into 2014 and Birmingham firefighters are already keeping busy.
So far this year there have been seven fire fatalities.
The most recent was at the old Adams Inn, Friday morning, where one man died. At least six other people were living in the building at the time.
For the first time in a long time the number of fire fatalities are up while the number of homicides in the Magic City are down.
"This is more fires than we've had in a couple of years," Bryan Harrell said. "Especially with it being the first five weeks in the year...we've already had seven fatalities."
Firefighters say the cause of most of this year's fires has been space heaters. They continue to stress for those who use them to always keep in mind common sense and safety.
