Following national shortage, O negative specific target of UAB blood drive

Beginning February 18, UAB will hold a blood drive in an effort to replenish the already depleted blood supply.{} All types of blood are needed, with emphasis being placed on the need for O negative blood and apheresis platelets.

The blood drive will be held at the UAB Hospital North Pavilian February 18 through February 23 and then February 26, 28, and March 1 at Highlands Hospital.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Hours for the North Pavilion drive are:
Monday, Feb. 18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Hours for the Highlands Hospital drive are:
Tuesday, Feb. 26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 28, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Mar. 1, 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Eligible donors of blood or platelets can make an appointment to donate at either drive, using sponsor code "UAB," or at 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Donors will be eligible for prize giveaways. Validated parking is available at the Fourth Avenue parking deck for the North Pavilion drive. Parking is free at UAB Highlands. Donors should bring a photo ID.

Nationally, UAB is one of the largest users of blood supplied by the Red Cross. Donors can give blood up to six times a year, every eight weeks.
