Former prison guard pleads guilty in inmate death

A former Alabama prison guard has pleaded guilty in connection with the beating death of an inmate..Former Ventress Correctional Facility officer Joseph Sanders pleaded guilty Monday on one count of obstructing justice. {}The plea came after jury selection for his trial had started.Sanders is the fourth former prison system employee to be convicted or plead guilty in the case.Sanders' attorney says the former guard admits lying to investigators when he said he didn't see a baton in a prison office where Mack was beaten.Federal{}prosecutors agreed to drop charges accusing Sanders of hitting Mack with a baton.Sanders faces up to 20 years in prison.His sentencing is set for September 23rd.
