Former Spain Park star gets opening day start for Samford baseball

Former Spain Park pitcher Chase Traffica has earned Opening Day honors for the Samford Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs host Valparaiso Friday night, which will also mark Traffica's debut with the team. He transferred from Louisiana-Lafayette for his fifth year of eligibility.

Traffica was the Ragin Cajuns opening day starter last season but a tore forearm muscle cut his season short. He finished 3-2 with a 7.26 ERA in nine games.

Traffica missed all of 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Samford plays Valparaiso three times at Joe Lee Griffin Field this weekend. The first game gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. followed by Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
