Former UA President Joab Thomas dies at 81

The University of Alabama has confirmed that former President Joab Thomas has died.

Thomas, 81 passed away in Tuscaloosa. Thomas became a professor at UA in 1966. He later moved into administrative roles and on to North Carolina State University as Chancellor.

In 1981 Thomas returned to UA as President until his resignation in 1988. He remained at the University in a teaching position until accepting the presidency at Penn State , which he held until 1995.

A Russellville, Alabama native, Thomas returned to Tuscaloosa after his retirement.

A memorial service is scheduled to be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa.
