      Funeral arrangements were announced Thursday morning for Rep. Demetrius Newton (D-Birmingham District 53).

      A viewing will be held at Arrington Funeral Home in Birmingham on Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.{} His funeral will be held Saturday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield beginning at 11 a.m.

      Newton, 85, passed away at his home in Birmingham. A cause of death is not yet known, although Newton had been ill for some time.

      He{}served in the Alabama House of Representatives since 1986.{} Newton was the first African-American Speaker Pro-Tem of the House, a position he held from 1998 to 2010.

      The family of Rep. Demetrius Newton, in an effort to accommodate those planning to attend the services, have changed the location of the funeral. Please find below updated information.
