Gary Palmer supporters celebrate GOP nod for Congressional District 6

Alabama {}is one step closer to having a new representative for Alabama's sixth Congressional District. Gary Palmer won by a big majority against Representative Paul DeMarco. {}

Over 300 supporters and volunteers packed the Marriott Highway 280 ballroom.

"The entire campaign was built on prayer, it was sustained by prayer, and tonight it was delivered by prayer," Palmer said after the announcement.{}

Palmer told us he's thankful for the volunteers and supporters - who used social media, put up signs, and went door to door.

"Jefferson County and this district has been through a lot in the past decade or so," Palmer said. "I think we are at a point now where we can start to grow. I want to be a part of that."

Palmer says he wants to focus on jobs, on building Alabama's energy production. {}Election night marked the 25th anniversary when Gary Palmer began the Alabama Policy Institute - an organization emphasizing limited government, free markets, and strong families. He says that experience prepared him for Congress.

"You do not have to do the things that make people hate politics," Palmer said. "We need to restore civility at talk about how to get our country back on the right track. Get beyond the politics and the parties and put the country first."

Palmer told us he hopes his campaign will serve as a model for how to run a campaign. He says his focus has been running on the issues, and ideas, and integrity. Palmer now faces the democratic opponent in November.{}
