Gate City mom holding newborn when hit by a bullet
A family is grieving after a young mother is shot in Gate City. The victim is 24 year old Sheri Williams. Police say she was standing in her doorway holding her ten day old son when she was hit by gunfire on 64th Court way South.
Birmingham Police are calling this a homicide investigation. There are no arrests in this case yet.
"Life is too short."
It's a mother's nightmare. Rinda Williams says her 24-year-old daughter, Sheri, was holding her 10 day old baby boy and talking to a neighbor when a bullet hit her. "My baby's son was trying to break a fight up or something and some dude came behind him shooting and the bullet was just bouncing."
The baby was not harmed, but Birmingham police say Sheri Williams died at the scene. She was the mother of three. "She took care of her kids, she didn't bother nobody."
Family friend, Albert Sykes, says "I want to find out who did this."
Neighbor, Christine Wynn, says "Why don't they learn, put your guns away."
There have been several deadly shooting in this Gate City area. Neighbors are outraged that an innocent mother would lose her life because of violence. Wynn says, "We got other children out here, my grandchildren are out here. I'm scared for them, why are we shooting each other? What is the problem?"
Williams says her daughter had been trying to move out of the neighborhood for a while.
As the family waits for answers, William's must now comfort her daughter's children. "I would never believe that my baby would be gone today."
