Former Alabama Governor George C. Wallace was one of the most controversial politicians in U.S. history. Wallace's attempt to block school integration in 1963 propelled him into the national spotlight.
Wallace's phrase, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" became a rallying cry.
Later in life however, this four-term governor apologized for his segregationist policies.
Wallace died on this day in 1998 in Montgomery, Alabama at the age of 79.
