New group aims to ease anxieties from losing a pet

"On November 8, 2013, I had to put my beloved Labrador Retriever, Dixie, to sleep," says Randy Hays. Adding, "I was devastated and cried and cried for days."

Dixie was 15-years-old when she died of kidney failure. Hays sought comfort from churches and grief support groups to no avail. It seems there's no group who supports people who lost pets, until now. With help from The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Hays started a grief support group designed for people who lost pets. It called Dixie's Group, named in honor of Dixie the Labrador Retriever. The first meeting is Tuesday, March 4 at Homewood Library, 1721 Oxmoor Road. It lasts from 5:30pm to 7pm every Tuesday for 6 weeks and it's free to attend, though donations are welcomed.
