Groups help students prepare for classes with backpack giveaways

Many students return to school this week, and some groups are helping get those students ready and save their parents a little money. This weekend, hundreds of backpacks are getting filled with supplies and sent home with students for free.{}{}

In Homewood, more than one hundred students got free backpacks full of school supplies Saturday. The Joe Lockett Radio Show handed out the bags at Hamburger Heaven as part of the Lock and Learn event. The clear and mesh backpacks were filled with crayons, glue, paper, pencils, and rulers.

Some Birmingham families also got help preparing for the school year at the Woodlawn Community Fun Day Saturday. Jackson Street Missionary Baptist Church handed out school uniforms and back-to-school supplies as part of its outreach. There were health screenings and voter registration booths.

Sunday, Hillcrest Middle School will host a back to school rally from 4 to 6 p.m.. Professional basketball player and Tuscaloosa native, DJ White, will hand out school supplies and backpacks to students who need them.

The Rotaract Club of Birmingham is also handing out free supplies and clear backpacks at four Birmingham libraries Saturday, August 9. More than 800 students will be able to get them at Avondale, East Lake, Pratt City and Wylam branches.
