So far, 712 people in Shelby County have applied for their pistol permit. That's up from 500 in November. 1,089 people have applied in Etowah County. But no other county beat out Jefferson County. To date, Jefferson County has 4,168 people that have applied.
With so many guns available, there's the possibility for more people pulling the trigger on the streets which could cause concerns for law enforcement. Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry says that's not the case.
"It's not the instrument that delivers the damage, it's the thought, it's the action that makes no sense, it's a mistake people make," says Curry.
