Hillcrest Middle School student, 14, arrested for bringing gun to school

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- A 14-year-old student at Hillcrest Middle School was arrested Thursday for allegedly bringing a gun to school, Tuscaloosa County Schools said. According to a release, the student was charged with one county of possession of a weapon on school property after a weapon was found in the teen's backpack. Fellow classmates were credited with alerting administrators of the weapon in the student's bag. The gun was secured and an arrest was made immediately.Officials said there were no threats made to any students, teachers or faculty. "We are so proud of our students at Hillcrest Middle School who were brave to report their finding," Tuscaloosa County Schools Superintendent Dr. Liz D. Swinford said. "It shows character, leadership and makes a clear statement that students are invested in ensuring that their school is safe."
