HIV/AIDS numbers slightly up in Alabama

December 1 marks the annual observance of World AIDS Day.

30 years into the AIDS epidemic and much progress has been made in treating the disease, however, statistics show many more people continue to be infected.

It's estimated that 50,000 Americans are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, every year.

Here in Alabama, the rate of HIV and AIDS has increased slightly from last year, according to the 2012 data sheet released Saturday.

The report shows that nearly 14 people per 100,000 people were diagnosed with the disease in the state this year.
