Hoover man's poor driving leads to his arrest for Tortuga's Pizza burglary
A 34-year-old Hoover man has been arrested in connection to a Tuesday morning burglary of a pizza restaurant after crashing his vehicle during a getaway attempt.
Keith Allan Smith has been charged with third-degree burglary after being apprehended by Hoover Police on Interstate 459 North at 1:52 a.m. yesterday.
Smith allegedly stole the cash register from Tortuga's Pizza on John Hawkins Parkway at around 1:47 a.m. and fled in his vehicle on I-459, but he didn't make it far after he ran off the roadway, becoming stranded on the side of the interstate.
A passerby reported Smith's car running off the road to the Hoover 911 Center, and police were dispatched to the scene for assistance. Upon their arrival, they found Smith in possession of the stolen cash register. He was arrested and taken to the Hoover City Jail, where he is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail. Smith's bond is set at $15,000.
