Hoover woman killed in early-morning accident on I-20/59 in Bessemer

BESSEMER, Ala. -- A Hoover woman died Friday morning in a wrong-way accident on Interstate 20/59, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed to ABC 33/40.

Celyce Olivia Thompson, 24, was killed around 1:30 a.m. when the car she was driving north in a southbound lane of traffic was struck by an 18-wheeler near exit 104, which is the Rock Mountain Lakes exit. Thompson died at the scene while the driver of the truck managed to escape the incident without injury.

Authorities were forced to divert traffic for over six hours as crews worked to clear the crash scene.

According to Thompson's Facebook profile, she worked as an electrical technician at Revere Control Systems in Hoover.

An investigation remains ongoing. An official cause of the crash hasn't been released.
