Huffman High School teacher, 41, charged with having sexual contact with student under 19

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A Huffman High School teacher has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with a student, Birmingham police said. Phillip Smith III, 41, of Birmingham, is charged with one count of school employee having sexual contact with a student under 19 in connection with an incident that occurred at the school in December 2013. According to Lt. Sean Edwards, police received a report of Smith behaving inappropriately with a student in January of this year, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. Following the probe, investigators released their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. A grand jury indicted Smith on Wednesday. Smith, who was placed on administrative leave during the probe and has since been terminated, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and later released on a $60,000 bond.
