BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A crowd of several hundred have gathered at a downtown Birmingham park to show their support for changing federal immigrations laws.

Many participants in the Wednesday evening demonstration wore white and demonstrators shouted "Who is Alabama? We Are Alabama!"

The program was in Spanish and English, and many demonstrators carried signs with slogans reading "Do not deport honest people," and "We are all immigrants."

The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice says one goal of the protest is to show U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions that Alabamians support immigration reform.

Sessions is among the Republican opponents of legislation that critics say amounts to amnesty for people living in the country illegally.

Similar rallies have been planned in other U.S. cities.
