Hundreds of Birmingham-Southern College students marched Wednesday to honor the legacy of former student Marti Turnipseed.

On this day 50 years ago, Turnipseed, a white woman, joined several other black women in a sit-in at Woolworth's Department Store. The business was segregated at the time and Turnipseed was arrested then expelled from Birmingham-Southern College for her involvement.

The school later reinstated her and she went on to graduate from the Birmingham liberal arts college.

Marti's brother, Rev. Spencer Turnipseed, Birmingham Mayor William Bell and school leaders took part in the walk that ended at the historic Kelly Ingram Park.
