Impact Alabama sponsoring free tax preparations

Impact Alabama's "SaveFirst" program is starting its sixth year of providing residents with free tax preparations. {}The initiative will provide free income tax preparation services to working families making less than $50,000/year with kids in the home or $20,000/year without kids in the home.{} This year, families will have an opportunity to win $10,000 cash.{} Families will earn a chance to win for every $50 you invest in government savings bonds.

The tax preparation service is aimed at assisting families eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is the federal government's largest and most successful antipoverty program for low-income, working families.{}However, each year, about 75% of Birmingham's EITC recipients pay an average of $200 each simply to access this benefit.{}More than 35,000 families in the City of Birmingham claim over $90 million through the federal EITC each year. However, these same families lose millions to commercial tax preparers through preparation fees.

Alabama residents interested in participating in SaveNow WinLater or in scheduling a free tax preparation appointment should call 1-888-99-TAX-AL.{} For general information about Impact Alabama or this press conference, please contact Stephen Black{}or{}(205) 936-9963.

CALL 1-888-99-TAX-AL to schedule an appointment for free tax preparation.{} Daytime, evening, and weekend hours are available.
