Get free help on your taxes

Tax filers may qualify to have their federal and state tax returns prepared and e-filed free at a special one-day help site.{}

IRS-certified volunteers will provide the free service to filers whose household income was below $52,000 in 2013 or who file a simple tax return. They will be at the North Shelby Library on Highway 119 on Saturday, March 29, from 10a.m. to 3p.m.

To have your tax return prepared at one of these sites, bring the following information with you:

  • Photo proof of identification
  • Social Security cards for themselves, their spouse and all dependents or Social Security number verification letters issued by the Social Security Administration
  • Birth dates for all persons listed on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R, from all employers and income sources
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Copies of prior year federal and state returns, if available
  • Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of refunds
  • Other relevant information about income and expenses
  • Amounts paid for day care, if applicable, and the day care provider's identifying number

Both spouses must be present to sign joint returns

There are more than 100 free tax help sites open now in Alabama. Filers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit the IRS website{}and search for "Free Tax Help" to find the closest site. Some sites specialize in helping senior citizens with their taxes.
