IRS: $12.5 million in 2010 tax refunds still owed to thousands of Alabamians

Good news from the Internal Revenue Service. According to the IRS website, thousands of Alabamaians are still owed refunds from 2010, but if you are one of the government's debtors, you need to act quickly. The IRS says it owes approximately $12.5 million to 15,700 residents in the state who didn't file tax returns four years ago. Some may have not filed due to too little income, but the government says if taxes were withheld from your wages, you may still qualify for a return."The window is quickly closing for people who are owed refunds from 2010 who haven't filed a tax return," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. "We encourage students, part-time workers and others who haven't filed for 2010 to look into this before time runs out on April 15."{}The IRS estimates that around 50 percent of the individual refunds still owed total nearly $600, but after April 15, the unclaimed money will become property of the US Treasury. For more details and information on how to claim a refund, click here.
