The IRS is warning taxpayers about a phone scam.It starts with a call. The caller claims to be with the IRS and asks for personal information. They will tell you that you owe money and you can pay by credit card. They may also ask for your social security number. DO NOT give any information over the phone. The IRS wants consumers to know they will usually send out a letter in the mail first.If you get a suspicious call, just hang up.- If you DO owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.- If you DO NOT owe taxes, call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.- You should also report any scammers with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov.
